ESC Call for Abstracts

Thank You for Your Interest in Speaking at ESC!

We are now accepting submissions of abstracts for ESC, one of the five summits occurring at DESIGN East, September 17-20, 2012 at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston, MA.

DEADLINE TO SUBMIT: March 16, 2012

Click here for: Android Summit CFA and DesignMED CFA.

These conferences have a strong reputation of offering very high quality technical programs. We receive many more qualified submissions than can be selected. Read more about what we're looking for.

ESC Boston Conference 2012 Track Descriptions:

Analog & Mixed Signal Design
The interface from analog to digital domains and interference between devices. Design tools and SPICE modeling and applications in which analog is critical from audio to high spec measurements.

Debugging, Optimization and Software Engineering
Developing performance-based bug-free and efficient code that works, is reliable and is CPU-, memory- , and power-efficient. Reviewing programming fundamentals, building programming skills, software architectures, optimization and best practices.

Embedded I/O Systems
Hardware-centric approaches to systems, form factors, HMI displays, reference design examples, storage, display and input devices for embedded systems.

Low-Power Design
Hardware and software issues in low-power design. Accurate power estimation and measurement. Balancing low power, performance and cost - from processor selection and low-power modes, system design, tips and tricks, and writing efficient software.

Microcontrollers, ASSPs & SoCs
Understanding, selecting and programming microcontrollers; Sorting out the ARM architectures; Peripheral and memory issues and evaluating application-specific standard.

Military/Aerospace Design
Hardware, software and methodology practices for military and aerospace applications. Use of these techniques in other application areas.

Multicore
Understanding, evaluating and programming multiple-processor systems. The key issues in multicore processor design and implementation, including the effective use of multicore development and design tools.

Open-Source: Linux, Android, Eclipse, Arduino …
Evaluating, understanding and using Embedded Linux, the Android platform and other open-source software and platforms.

Programmable Devices
FPGAs as alternatives to microcontrollers, as signal-processing units, as configurable accelerators, or just as a way of implementing an interface: Selection, design and verification. Understanding and using the FPGA tool chain and how it differs from software development tools. Employing CPUs inside or beside FPGAs.

Project Management
Development methodologies, traceable design, developing and managing requirements, agile development, build and change management and other aspects of making a project succeed.

Prototyping & Development
Model-based prototyping, use of simulation, selection and use of development kits, FPGAs as prototyping aids.

Real-Time Systems
Fundamental real-time concepts, selecting and understanding an RTOS, developing and verifying real-time systems.

Safety & Security
All aspects of developing and testing systems that must be safe to deploy in life-critical applications, and systems that are secure against malicious attacks. Safety-critical regulations and design.

System Integration & Test
Integrating hardware with software, developing test strategies, managing and executing system test.

Wireless and Wired Connectivity
Understanding and implementing connections into embedded systems via cellular, the Intenet, WiFi, ZigBee, Bluetooth and other wireless protocols; the design of networks within embedded systems and interfaces such as USB and PCI Express. How will embedded designs make use of Cloud technology and solve the security concerns when sensitive data being transmitted.

We Are Looking For:

  • Technically challenging presentations that will provide a better understanding of processes and technologies
  • Topics that will appeal to a broad range of attendees
  • Practical information that can be immediately put to use back in the work place
  • Advanced material for returning attendees
  • Topics that stress processes and methodologies rather than products
  • How-to classes to ease the development process
  • Speakers with a desire to teach and share their technical expertise
  • Working systems developers with several years of practical development experience
  • Engineering managers who are willing to share their experiences about managing embedded projects
  • Speakers with strong organizational and speaking skills and good presentation materials

We Are NOT Looking For...

  • Presentations that suggest "let me tell you about my company products"
  • Topics of interest only to hobbyists or academics
  • Marketing managers
  • Presentations that focus on the features and benefits of your company's latest products
  • Speakers with no embedded development experience and no public speaking skills

A Note to Vendors

The technical programs at DESIGN East are educational tools offering how-to information to embedded systems developers and engineers. The classes offered are designed to provide knowledge of processes and techniques.

If your company's engineers are willing to share their technical expertise, and can do it in a presentation that focuses on a methodology or process and does not mention company's products, we welcome your submission.

We do not accept companies into the program; we accept speakers. If your speaker is accepted and needs to cancel, show management will decide whether to accept a replacement speaker or to put a new class in the program.

Before You Submit...

  • Make sure that you have all of the necessary information about the class and also about the speaker before you begin to fill out the submission form.
  • Check to make sure all fields are complete on your submission form. Each section is important. Incomplete submissions will not be considered.
  • When writing your abstract include one clear, concise thesis statement demonstrating the focus of the class.
  • Your biography is an important part of the submission; make sure to include your qualifications and current information.
  • Submissions that do not include a speaker name and/or speaker biography will not be reviewed.

Papers & Presentation Slides

All selected speakers MUST submit an 8-15 page technical paper and electronic presentation slides for the conference proceedings. Complete guidelines will be sent to accepted speakers.
